Sushi, Samurai, Sake

Sushi, Samurai, Sake is back!
Sushi, Samurai, Sake

After skipping a year the original EACS mega-event returns, bringing you a selection of samurai films, sushi from Sesame, and sake (or soft drinks, if you'd prefer). On Sunday, 9th May, from 14:00 in the ARC Conference Hall, EACS will be showing Ran (1985) by legendary director Akira Kurosawa, and Ichi (2008) by Fumihiko Sori.
Tickets cost £10 for members or £13 for non-members - all are welcome. Please buy before Saturday, 8th May so that orders for sushi can be made in advance. Remember to tell us if you are vegetarian when you buy your ticket.
To purchase your ticket, simply come to EACS AGM on Tuesday, 4th May at 18:00 ARC Room 2, or find one of our committee in Old Bar between 12:00 and 13:00 the rest of the week.

Ran is Akira Kurosawa's brilliantly conceived retelling of Shakespeare's 'King Lear' magically mixing Japanese history, Shakespeare's plot and Kurosawa's own feelings about loyalty in this epic masterpiece. Set in 16th century Japan, an ageing ruler, Lord Hidetora (Tatsuya Nakadai), announces his intention to divide his land equally among his three sons. This decision to step down unleashes a power struggle between the three, when Hidetora falls prey to the false flattery bestowed upon him by the two older sons and banishes the youngest when he speaks the truth. The ruthless betrayal ultimately drives Hidetora insane, destroying his entire family and kingdom. Deep human emotion and outstanding acting combine to create one of the most acclaimed foreign films of all time.

Ichi is a blind minstrel wandering from town to town in feudal Japan. She is spurred on by the search for one man - the blind warrior who trained her in martial arts as a child. When she is threatened by a group of bandits, she is "saved" by Toma, an incompetent samurai who is unable to draw his sword. Rescuing her rescuer, she continues her journey, only to discover that the locals now think that Toma is a superb swordsman. The townsfolk want him as a lawman, the bandits want him dead, and none of them realise that it is Toma's blind associate who is the true martial artist. Reluctantly, Ichi becomes embroiled in a battle between two gangs for the mastery of the town. However, Ichi's initial feelings about her involvement change when she discovers that the gang leader Banki may know the whereabouts of the man she is seeking.
